The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is one of those things we don’t find in Sacred Scripture (i.e. the Bible for you heathens.) And it doesn’t refer to the fact that we assume that she was taken up into heaven.
We can logically deduce that the woman to whom an angel appeared and said “Hail, thou who art full of grace; the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women. … Mary, do not be afraid; you have found favor in the sight of God. And behold, you shall conceive in your womb, and shall bear a son, and shall call him Jesus. He shall be great, and men will know him for the Son of the most High; the Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he shall reign over the house of Jacob eternally; his kingdom shall never have an end” would be in Heaven for all eternity with her beloved son Jesus Christ who is the savior of the human race. Can’t we? It’s not a difficult reach.
Tradition holds that she was taken bodily into Heaven so that her body would not suffer the decay which happens to the rest of us mere mortals, suffering in silence as we do.
St. Alphonsus writes, in the flowery language of his time:
After Jesus Christ, Our Savior, had ‘completed’, by His death, the Work-of-Redemption, the angels ardently desired to ‘possess’ Him in their Heavenly country; hence they were continually ‘supplicating’ Him in the words of David: “Arise, O Lord, into Thy Resting Place: Thou and the Ark, which Thou hast Sanctified” – Psalm 131:8.
“‘Come’ O Lord, ‘Come-Quickly’, now that Thou hast ‘Redeemed’ Men; ‘Come’ to Thy Kingdom and ‘Dwell’ with us, and ‘Bring’ with Thee the Living Ark of Thy Mother, who was the Ark which Thou didst Sanctify, by ‘Dwelling’ in her Womb.”
Precisely thus, does Saint-Bernardine make the Angels ‘Say’: “Let Thy Most Holy Mother Mary, Sanctified by Thy Conception, also Ascend”. Our Lord was, therefore, at length, ‘Pleased’ to ‘Satisfy’ the Desire-of these Heavenly Citizens, by ‘Calling’ Mary to Paradise. But, if it was His Will, that the Ark-of-the-Old-Dispensation should be ‘Brought’ with Great Pomp into the City-of-David, “And David, and all the House-of-Israel, ‘Brought’ the Ark-of-the-Covenant-of-the-Lord, with Joyful Shouting, and with Sound-of-Trumpet” – 2Kings 6:15; how much Greater and more Glorious Pomp, did He ‘Ordain’ that His Mother, should ‘Enter’ Heaven!
The Prophet-Elias was ‘Carried’ to Heaven in a Fiery Chariot, which according-to Interpreters, was no other than a Group-of-Angels, who ‘Bore’ him off from the Earth. “But, to ‘Conduct’ thee to Heaven, O Mother-of-God”, ‘Says’ the Abbot-Rupert, “a Fiery Chariot was not enough; the Whole Court-of-Heaven, ‘Headed’ by its King, thy Son, ‘Went-forth’ to ‘Meet’ and ‘Accompany’ thee”.
Jesus, the new Adam, ascended into Heaven. Mary, the new Eve – which can be traced diligently through Scripture – is assumed into Heaven by the power of the Most High God.
It’s said that she ascended above the choirs of angels, which echoes the restoration of our fallen human nature by Jesus Christ when he ascended to the right hand of Father. Something which is explained very well in the Letter to the Hebrews by the way, if you’re so inclined. Which you should be because ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ.
The Feast of the Assumption, by the way, has been clouded over by the release of the news out of Pennsylvania yesterday, which is horrendous and disgusting. I’m still trying to wrap my mind around it, though have had no problem expressing myself on Twitter, much to the disdain of the anonymous Twitter users who hide behind names like “RightHandofHim” (I’m completely making that up, I have no idea if it’s an actual Twitter username,) and tell one how to think, how to feel, what they should be doing, etc. I have no time for them anymore.
Frankly, it’s good to be horrified and disgusted by the news of the abuse of children, teens, minors which was essentially and realistically enabled by the hierarchy, which evidently viewed the main problem as one of public relations. Do we sit idly and give that a pass?
Nope. We help see to it that the crimes which cry out to heaven for vengeance don’t happen again.
Almighty everlasting God, who hast taken body and soul into heaven the Immaculate Virgin Mary, Mother of thy Son: grant, we beseech thee, that by steadfastly keeping heaven as our goal we may be counted worthy to join her in glory.
