The sad saga of Pere Sebe caught my eye the last few days. The Church is in a state and everyone’s pretty depressed. But suicide? I feel a call to pray for this man, his family, his friends, his parishioners – all of whom must be in a complete state of shock. What happened?
A 38-year-old French priest in a town in northern France committed suicide in his church after being accused of molesting a girl, local prosecutors and police sources told AFP on Wednesday. Jean-Baptiste Sebe killed himself on Tuesday in the church in Rouen amid allegations from a local mother that her daughter had been a victim of “indecent behaviour and sexual assault,” a police source said.
Was he extremely depressed and then an accusation came along and he tossed it all in? Was he guilty of something and didn’t feel like facing it? Was he suicidal anyway?
What was it like when he met Jesus Christ in the particular judgment? Did he get damned to hell for all eternity, or is there some kind of extenuating circumstance such as a severe mental illness condition?
Suicides raise a lot of questions. And they’re rarely good ones.

A 38-year-old French priest in a northern French town committed suicide in his church after being accused of molesting a young woman, local prosecutors and police sources told AFP on Wednesday.
Jean-Baptiste Sebe killed himself Tuesday in the church north of Rouen amid allegations from a local mother that her grown-up daughter had been a victim of “indecent behaviour and sexual assault,” a police source said.
The initial complaint was made to the archbishop of Rouen, and “police were not notified prior to the suicide,” the source added, stressing that investigators remained “very cautious at this stage.”
Local prosecutor Etienne Thieffry confirmed that an investigation was underway into “the exact reasons for the suicide” at the Saint-Jean XXIII church.
“At this point, no complaint has been filed,” Thieffry said.
A local parish priest and theology lecturer found dead following accusations of indecent behavior and sexual assault of a young girl Another shockwave has jolted the French Diocese of Rouen, just two years after the assassination of Father Jacques Hamel. Father Jean-Baptiste Sèbe, a “very well known and highly appreciated” 38-year-old priest, was found dead at St.
Here are some photos from the Facebook page of his Parish. God have mercy on all of them.
OK, he was around kids a lot – but does that say anything? That’s the problem these days, you wonder when things like this happen. At the same time, no news is coming forward; everyone is still no doubt in grief and shock.
Alter server stuff. The goofy picture followed by the normie picture.
All very public ministry. Popular Priest with so many around him.
At 38, no stranger to Selfies.
Why, in such a beautiful place? What type of anguish was he going through as he ministered, as he prayed, as he walked along the path of discipleship and holiness?
Maybe the liberal French Clergy got to him. Which is unfair to say about anyone who committed suicide. But it’s true I want to know more. And for all I know, maybe the conservative French Clergy got to him.
But I’ll pray for the repose of his soul, and the consolation of his family, and especially his parishioners. We’re a culture of life and then the Parish Priest offs himself in the church. Maybe it wasn’t suicide?
Maybe we won’t know until the particular judgment after we’ve gone through the scrutiny of all of our thoughts, words and actions by Jesus Christ, Himself.
